Friday Night Main concert

Friday Night Main concert

Once again we will start the festival concert schedule with an evening of old-time music in the beautiful Holy Trinity Church. We are delighted to present to you a double bill featuring grand masters of the tradition from the UK.

First up is the Long Hill Ramblers. Tab Hunter on guitar, Ben Paley on fiddle and Dan Edwards on banjo have each made international reputations for themselves as instrumentalists in all sorts of traditional music, in more bands than we can begin to list. The Ramblers features Laura Hockenhull's voice which must have been the best-kept secret in folk music over the last few years. If you're looking for a gimmick, move along. All the Long Hill Ramblers have to offer is folk music: clear, beautiful vocals, rich harmonies, virtuoso musicianship, and a repertoire drawn from among the finest traditional songs on both sides of the Atlantic. Ben’s fiddling is the cornerstone of their sound. ƒRoots magazine said he was "...just about the best folk fiddler of his generation". Altogether this fine band promises a night of fun and meaningful music.

Saturday Night Main Concert

Saturday Night Main Concert

Join us Saturday night for the grand concert in the superb Westport Town Hall Theatre. This year’s show features an international line-up from across the USA and Europe.

Hot Rock Pilgrims are a fantastic old time/bluegrass group featuring some of the most exciting young pickers in the South East of England. Hubert Murray (guitar), Dan Edwards (banjo), Bruno Pichler (dobro) and Kieran Towers (fiddle), and Sam Rose (bass). Together, they are a band comprised of "An Irishman, a German, and three Brits; together they will take you on a high-energy pilgrimage of Appalachian music and its descendants".

The Folky Thing

As in previous years, the festival's last concert is dedicated to folk music and is being host by Westport own folk club: “The Clew Bay Folk Club."

Number of the club's performers will open the night leading to the concert's main act – Daoiri Farrell.

Singer and bouzouki player Daoirí (pronounced 'Derry') Farrell is described by some of the biggest names in Irish folk music as one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. Six months after releasing the album 'True Born Irishman' Daoirí won two prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017 for Best Newcomer, and Best Traditional Track and performed live at the awards ceremony at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then he has toured twice to the UK, and played at festivals in Australia, Canada, the UK, Belgium, Denmark and more. In February 2018 he toured with the all-star Transatlantic Sessions in venues of up to 2,000 capacity and continues to be in demand across the world. The follow-up to 'True Born Irishman' is due out in autumn 2018.

BERNIE PHÁID

Hailing from the cultural wellsprings of the West Kerry Gaeltacht, with roots firmly planted in her tradition, bilingual singer and musician Bernie Pháid will host a special children's performance as part of this year's Westport Folk & Bluegrass Festival. Bernie is not only an acclaimed singer and musician, but she is also an Irish teacher with many years' teaching experience. Bernie will bring her musical and teaching talents together to ensure that the children have a memorable cultural experience which will last them a lifetime. Bernie's latest CD is entitled 'SÍOL', which means 'seed', and this performance will plant a culturally rich seed in the children, which we hope will be nurtured to create the live music audiences of the next generation. "You reap what you sow", so come along plant a seed, and enjoy the show!

As tobar cultúrtha Ghaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne ó dhúchas, lena fréamhacha curtha go daingean sa traidisiún, beidh an t-amhránaí agus ceoltóir dhátheangach, Bernie Pháid, ina hóstach ag an gceolchoirm fhíorspeisialta seo do pháistí ag Féile Cheol Tíre agus Bluegrass Chathair na Mart. Ní hamháin gur amhránaí agus ceoltóir clúiteach í Bernie, ach is múinteoir Gaeilge í chomh maith. Tabharfaidh sí a cuid scileanna ceoil agus múinteoireachta le chéile chun a chinntiú go mbeidh ócáid speisialta ann do pháistí a fhanfaidh ina gcuimhne acu don saol. Is é 'SÍOL' ainm an albaim is déanaí de chuid Bhernie, agus cuirfidh an seó seo síol cultúrtha sna páistí, agus táimid dóchasach go n-eascróidh lucht éisteachta na céad glúine eile as an síol sin. "Mar a chuirfeas tú, bainfidh tú" - mar sin, bígí linn, cuirigí síolta agus bainigí sult as an seó!
